From Star Trek [the original series, [1966-1969], originally. constructed and designed by Projects Unlimited' co-owner, Wah Ming Chang for Pramount Studios, its intention was to give Gene Roddneberry's new science fiction TV series, Star Trek, a "utilitarian" look. This page has two version of this visionary personal portable computer design. The one pictured, is as close to the original prop you are going to find. Straight from Roddenberry.com's online store, these $250 kits require several hours to build, but are worth every penny and every minute. the Rodd kits are built from the same moulds that were built for the Star Trek Deep Space 9 retro 30th anniversary episode Trials and Tribble-ations. If you have not seen this episode, it is available from the Roddenberry.com webstore. Even if you are not a fan of Deep Space 9, this episode is a great one because of the Original Star trek tie-in. | Back in the 1970's these kits were available at conventions and in the back of Star Log magazines. Many were poorly constructed by young fans using rubber cement and inferior constructions standards. I found this one on e-bay several years ago, and after building up a Roddeberry kit, I restored this one. Note, this unofficial version has no top door flap cover, and originally the metal door handles were a simple flat metal. I have since custome made replacements. A scratch built tricorder is a planned project, and the idea of a working screen version is also being explored. | Here is an image of the custom made door handle replacements on the old copy tricorder. The morie' needs soem more help, the original one was of poor construction and the correct one is currently being researched. Also, the bezel for the morie' is too thick. the other differences between the two are:
